Pentagon Intelligence Comes Off as M*A*S*H in New Book
Anyone who’s spent time in uniform will recognize the stories that A.J. Rossmiller tells in “Still Broken: A Recruit’s Inside Account of Intelligence Failures, From Baghdad to the Pentagon.” His DIA has its own versions of Hawkeye, B.J., Colonel Potter, and of course, Frank Burns.

The author of the book had less than two years in the DIA. How that possibly qualifies him as an expert on the DIA, the Intelligence Community, and Iraq, I will never, ever know...I've worked in it for close to 20 years and I would never presume to have all the answers.

That's a very pertinent question. My own take from reading "Still Broken" and talking to the author, Alex Rossmiller, is that he's not presenting himself as "an expert on the DIA" at all. The book is merely his story of his experiences as a DIA analyst, which are alternately funny and horrifying -- like M*A*S*H. It's well worth reading, in my opinion. I could have written a similar book on my experiences as an MI case officer in Vietnam years back, but I, like Rossmiller, wouldn't have presented myself as an expert on MI. Thanks for writing.
